This tradition dates back to 1621 when the Plymouth colonists shared their autumn harvest feast with the Wampanoag Native Americans after their first bountiful harvest. In 1789, President George Washington proclaimed the first Thanksgiving as a national holiday on November 26th. Later, in 1836, President Abraham Lincoln formalized the declaration of the last Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day.
